Description
My watercolor painting for Day 34 theme Doorway (60 Days, 60 Themes – Isolation Art Challenge) is a doorway of a nearby French restaurant. I’m in the northwest corner of Roseville, California. It is a relatively new part of town with no businesses close by, not counting the pharmacy 1 mile away. In a 1.5 mile radius there are two restaurants, the French restaurant next to a park and the other in a retirement community. Things are finally changing after 6 years here as the city continues to build out to the west and new businesses and gas stations are being planned to accommodate the residential explosion. A new high school is nearing completion about a quarter mile from my home. I live near their newest fire station. In another year or two, I’ll have more doorway options to eat, shop, get gas, and paint.
This 12” X 16” watercolor was painted on Fluid 100, 140 lb, cold press paper. I switch watercolor papers every so often to keep myself out of a rut and to give myself a challenge. Lesser quality paper can be more difficult as it has poor absorption of paint, may be too soft for correction or rough techniques, and the paint looks duller. I just have to adapt to materials and make it work. Of all the materials that a watercolor artist needs, good quality paper is the number one priority. It’s more important than the quality of brushes or paints. Someone trying to learn watercolor using bad paper is just making it doubly hard on themselves and may be disappointed at the results. This usually comes as an unexpected surprise to a beginner and doesn’t make sense, until they learn the hard way.
