This is my watercolor painting of the UC Davis Arboretum. On a blustery winter day in early February, I went on an Arboretum hike led by Marie Z with the Sacramento Baby Boomers Singles meetup group. The 100 acre Davis Arboretum is along the banks of the old north channel of Putah Creek on the south side of the University of California, Davis campus in Yolo County, California. The arboretum was founded in 1936 and is free to visit. The gardens are open 24 hours a day every day of the year. The Arboretum contains a 3.5 miles paved path loop for pedestrians. The collection includes some 22,000 trees and plants adapted to a Mediterranean climate. The arboretum is used for research and teaching by UC Davis.
This 15” X 22” painting was done on Fabriano, 140 lb, rough paper.
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
