#428 Near Folsom Point
This is my watercolor painting of a part of Lake Folsom, near Folsom Point looking north. In the middle of January I went on a group hike on one of the many trails at Folsom State Park. It’s not the most scenic time of year or a particularly scenic location. If I’m on an outing and have a camera, I try to look for things to paint. So no matter how plain it looked in winter, I was going to make lemonade out of lemons.
The hike was led by Sky Nelder, who started a Meetup group for local activities. The group is called Everything Under The Moon and Stars and now has about 8,900 members. In a few short years, what was just an idea became one of the largest activity groups in our region. Their calendar is full of events. But unfortunately, the Covid 19 isolation rules put a damper on the social activity. Not deterred, Sky adapted and scheduled online group events to keep the spirit going. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
