This is my watercolor painting of the Valencia Club in Penryn, California. The Valencia Club at 2162 Taylor Road opened as a restaurant back in 1945. Back in the day, Taylor Road used to be U.S. Highway 40, before I-80 was built through the Sierra Foothills in the late 1950's. The classic neon sign dates from the 1950's. There was a time when the “Dive Bar” was between owners in 2010 and a homeless guy made the news in this Gold Country Media article: The Valencia Club is closed again and the man who claimed to own it is behind bars today facing charges of selling liquor without a license. Travis Kevie’s four-day career as proprietor of the historic bar came to a crashing end after the Valencia Club’s property manager and then the Placer County Sheriff’s Department learned through an Auburn Journal report that the establishment had re-opened. A few short hours later, Kevie, a 29-year-old rodeo bull rider who grew up in Newcastle, was being led away from the Taylor Road...
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
