This is my watercolor painting of a gaggle of Snow Geese that I saw at the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge at 2180 State Highway 20 in California. We were on the loop road at Colusa NWR to take photos and with my telephoto lens I managed to get some reference shots. Without a telephoto lens it would be hard to get a close shot because they still keep their distance even though they’re at a wildlife refuge.
The population of greater snow geese (Anser caerulescens) was in decline at the beginning of the 20th century, but has now recovered to sustainable levels. Snow geese in North America have increased to the point where the tundra breeding areas in the Arctic and the saltmarsh wintering grounds are both becoming severely degraded, and this affects other species using the same habitat. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. Probably sold. I moved to Georgia recently and all my art is in boxes. Won't unpack until I buy a house which might be at the end of the year. Then I will unpack and know for sure. But I think it's sold.
