Artist's Description

In December 2019 I went to the High Hand Gallery in Loomis, California, to see the annual Steampunk Victorian Holiday Faire. I always walk by the High Hand Nursery koi pond on the way to see the artists. I saw a mixture of leaves and koi and decided to make a watercolor painting out of it. Most of the year the koi pond does not have leaves in it. It is popular spot for the kids to look at including big kids like me.

Here’s a fun fact about koi. Most koi fish outlive their owners, having a lifespan of 200+ years. There is even a legendary koi named Hanako that lived to be the oldest koi in history. Hanako was hatched in 1751 and lived to be 226 years old, passing away in 1977. That’s a very long life span! However, most koi live 30-40 years.

This 22” X 15” watercolor painting was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.

This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint. As a fan of Van Gogh, and knowing that he painted images from his day to day life: houses, fields, people working, I decided to do the...
