Artist's Description
I went on a plein air outing to Henningsen Lotus Park which features the South Fork of the American River and painted this watercolor. The location is about a half mile down the river from Highway 49 which runs along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Coloma, two miles to the east as the crow flies, is the spot on this same river where John Marshall discovered gold flakes on January 24, 1848. That simple discovery led to the California Gold Rush of 1849 which dramatically impacted the history of California.
About 50’ up the river, Carol Grismore was also painting plein air. Only a few people were in the park that morning and I anticipated a quiet painting session. About an hour later busloads of school kids arrived for a recreation outing with the yelling, running, and the obligatory rock tosses in the river. I was focused on painting so I tuned it all out. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
