Description
Every year I have two to four Black-Chinned Hummingbird nests in my backyard. This watercolor painting of the nest shows two chicks and is the same nest that Leonard James photographed for an award of excellence at the California State Fair. The oldest chick is about to leave the nest in two days which is why it looks like an adult. A Black-chinned Hummingbird’s eggs are about the size of a coffee bean. The nest, made of plant down and spider and insect silk, expands as the babies grow. For my yard, they add the white hair from my dog, Mochi, who happens to shed about that time of the year.
A small green-backed hummingbird of the West, with no brilliant colors on its throat except a thin strip of iridescent purple bordering the black chin, only visible when light hits it just right. Black-chinned Hummingbirds are exceptionally widespread, found from deserts to mountain forests. Often perches at the very top of a bare branch. Low-pitched humming sound produced by wings.
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Fabriano, 140 lb, rough paper.
