Description
The Lincoln plein air group was fortunate to get a tour of the MacDonald Ranch in December, 2018 on utility vehicles driven by the ranch owners. At a crest of a small hill we stopped and Angus heifers came up to get their special treat from their owner’s hand, cow cookies. The cow cookies are a compressed feed disc made with a special recipe that the cattle love. Being the city slicker that I am, I had to look up what a heifer is. A heifer is a young female cow that has not borne a calf. A cow is a mature female bovine that has had at least one calf.
The MacDonald Ranch is a non-profit working cattle ranch roughly seven miles northeast of Lincoln, California. If they sell beef outright, the proceeds are donated. Sometimes they donate beef to those in need. They also raffle beef to raise funds for a veteran cause. Besides the cattle, they also have chickens and fruit trees. The eggs and fruit are given to veterans in need.
This 15” X 22” watercolor painting was done on Arches, 140 lb, rough paper.
