Description
Our plein air group decided to go to Auburn, California, for a sketch outing in March. Instead of a big painting I decided to sketch in the Urban Sketcher fashion. Finding a place to sit on the corner of Lincoln Way and High Street, I pulled out a sketchbook and used a pen to draw what I saw. Then I used my miniature watercolor pan set to paint in some color washes in the drawing. This is typical of the Urban Sketching style which a worldwide art movement.
Urban Sketchers (USk) is a global community of artists that practice drawing on location in cities, towns and villages they live in or travel to. The Urban Sketchers movement was started on Flickr in 2007 by journalist Gabriel Campanario. The USk motto is “We show the world, one drawing at a time!”
The nearest Urban Sketcher group to my region is in Davis, California led by Pete Sculley. Since 2008, Pete has been the Davis correspondent for the global sketching website Urban Sketchers. Pete was in the founding group of correspondents. Since 2010, Pete has organized a free monthly (well, nearly monthly) sketchcrawl called “Let’s Draw Davis” as a way to bring local sketchers together to draw their city. You can do an internet search on urban sketchers or sketchcrawl to get more information and to find the nearest group to your location.
This small 5 ½” X 8 ½” ink and watercolor sketch was done on Canson Montval, 140 lb, cold press paper.
