Artist's Description

Since I painted the Rainbow Bridge in Folsom, I decided to also paint the bridge next to it, known as the Folsom Historic Truss Bridge which spans Lake Natoma (American River). For this view I climbed down to the rocks between the bridges. For the fine bridge truss lines I used a Sakura pen with archival pigmented ink. The rest of the painting is watercolor.

This bridge is historically and technologically significant for several reasons. It is a rare example of a pin-connected truss bridge exhibiting the Pennsylvania truss configuration. With an 1893 construction date, it is also an old surviving example of this type, especially in the context of California. It is also a long span of this type, particularly for a pre-1900 Pennsylvania truss bridge.

On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
