I painted the iconic Tower Bridge that crosses the Sacramento River connecting West Sacramento to Sacramento, California with a view looking toward the East.
On December 15, 1935, then-governor Frank Merriam dedicated the bridge, and led the inaugural crossing parade across it. 1000 homing pigeons were released to carry the news throughout California. The first train had crossed the bridge on November 7, 1935. The Tower Bridge was the first vertical lift bridge in the California Highway System after it was formally accepted by the state on January 11, 1936. The bridge originally carried railroad traffic in the center, with vehicular traffic to the sides, but this was ended in 1963.
The bridge was originally painted silver, but since 1976 has been painted an ochre to give it the appearance of gold. The gold color suits the impressive landmark appearance of the bridge quite well. The concrete pillars on the approaches were originally painted blue, but this wore off...
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman.
