Artist's Description

California Highway Patrol has one horse power vehicles. While strolling through the Capitol grounds in Sacramento I spotted these draft horses. The CHP has maintained an equestrian unit since Governor Pete Wilson merged the State Police with the CHP in 1995. Mounted patrol officers are responsible for the State Capitol and Capitol Park, as well as patrolling the hundreds of state properties in Downtown Sacramento. The MPU is used for general patrol and as an essential tool for crowd control during demonstrations or civil unrest situations, always ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. The unit exclusively uses draft horses, which are not only breathtaking in size and beauty, but also have the personality characteristics required for police work.

This watercolor painting was done on Fluid 100, cold press, 140 lb paper and is 12" X 16" in size.

This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint. As a fan of Van Gogh, and knowing that he painted images from his day to day life: houses, fields, people working, I decided to do the...
