California Highway Patrol has one horse power vehicles. While strolling through the Capitol grounds in Sacramento I spotted these draft horses. The CHP has maintained an equestrian unit since Governor Pete Wilson merged the State Police with the CHP in 1995. Mounted patrol officers are responsible for the State Capitol and Capitol Park, as well as patrolling the hundreds of state properties in Downtown Sacramento. The MPU is used for general patrol and as an essential tool for crowd control during demonstrations or civil unrest situations, always ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. The unit exclusively uses draft horses, which are not only breathtaking in size and beauty, but also have the personality characteristics required for police work.
This watercolor painting was done on Fluid 100, cold press, 140 lb paper and is 12" X 16" in size.
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
