While hiking near Rattlesnake Bar at Folsom Lake, I spotted a kayak between the shore and an outcropping which inspired this watercolor. It was one of the more scenic areas of the lake and area where the North Fork of the American River comes feeds the lake.
Folsom Lake is a reservoir on the American River in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California. It is located within Placer, El Dorado, and Sacramento Counties. It is about 25 mi northeast of Sacramento. The lake contains 11,500 acres of water. The lake has a surface elevation of 466 feet. There are 75 miles of undulated shoreline surrounding the lake. Folsom lake and the surrounding Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is one of the most visited parks in the California Park system.
This watercolor painting was done on a half-sheet size (15" X 22") of Kiliminjaro 140 lb., cold press, watercolor paper.
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent.
