Artist's Description

I experimented with a watercolor painting of the Auburn State Theater on a new type of textured clayboard. It was definitely different than regular watercolor paper and not necessarily in a good way. Below is a bit of historical information about the State Theater.

On December 26, 1930, a new and exciting venture was introduced in the City of Auburn. At the State Theater's grand opening, attendees marveled at the beautiful interior, elaborate furnishings and marvelous sound projection. The building had 1,325 seats.

The building was extensively remodeled in 1972, the balcony removed, the front part of the auditorium divided into two theaters and the rear of the auditorium converted to a mall. During the late 1990s, Doris Viera and Esther Stanton, long-time boosters of the City of Auburn, solicited backing from the Auburn community to create a performing arts center in the historic State Theater in Downtown Auburn. My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint.
