Description
Mitzi is one of two Schnoodles owned by my friend, Adrienne. Schnoodles are usually a cross of the smaller breeds of schnauzer and poodle, like Mitzi. Giant Schnoodles are created by crossing larger sizes of schnauzers and poodles. A Schnoodle can take on the coat characteristics of either parent breed, such as the wiry hair of the schnauzer, the softer, curly hair of the poodle, or an intermediary coat. That was one of the things that I thought would be challenging to paint, the curly hair which for Mitzi is mostly white with tan accents. To paint the hair I used colored accents, usually reflected light or shadows. The white I use is just the white of the paper.
For this painting I used hot press paper. For me hot press watercolor paper (smooth surface) is trickier to use than the normal cold press. My least favorite watercolor paper surface. However to keep fresh and to improve, sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone.
This painting was done in transparent watercolor.
