I saw your painting at the Acoustic Den tonight! I am also a watercolor artist, and your work is just incredible. I will come there on a Wednesday to meet you. I also have work posted on fine art america website: Lauri Dickinson. I read your bio and it is very interesting. I like the Acoustic Den and my husband and I go there often as we live near by. We both play instruments too.

William Lum replied:

I'll be there this Wednesday. Lately I go about every other week to watch the Open Mic Night. See you there...

Artist's Description

On Wednesday night, the Acoustic Den Cafe in Roseville, California hosts open mic nights. That's my usual hangout for a Wednesday evening, to watch free live music while sipping a cup of tea. Many talented performers show up from all around the region at random to showcase their music there. Every night is different you never know what to expect.

In this painting there are three performers but they've never actually played together at the same time. It is a composite picture of three people that I saw there that night. On the left is Darrell Effinger, who usually does the MC role for open mic and he was formerly with the New Christy Minstrels. Ric Morales, is the singer songwriter is in the middle. I have jammed with Ric a few times. Joe Landry is on the right. Joe Landry won the 2016 Best Singer Songwriter award for the West Coast.

This painting was done in transparent watercolor.

On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman. Fatefully discovering a cheap watercolor paint set, and intrigued by my relationship with Kingman, I wondered if I had inherited any of his talent. This lingering question spurred me into trying to paint. My first challenge was deciding what subjects I would paint. As a fan of Van Gogh, and knowing that he painted images from his day to day life: houses, fields, people working, I decided to do the...
