One of the earliest recorded locations minded by African-American gold miners was on Negro Bar, a large sand bar located on the south bank of the lower American River, in what is now the City of Folsom. The site received its name because of a small number of African-Americans who were reputed to be the first to mine the area in late 1849. The current Negro Bar State Recreation Area, located on the opposite side of the American River, retains the historic name of California's first Black gold mining site.
This a popular place for locals to access the American River for kayaking and swimming. Farther upstream is the Folsom Dam. Painting was done in transparent watercolor.
My search to find my biological family was the genesis of my journey into the world of art. When I finally found my birth family, at the age of 40, I was plunged into a new and very different family. On one occasion while talking with the father I had never known, I discovered that my great uncle was the renowned watercolorist Dong Kingman.
